Best Guide on how to train a dog (training tips for your dog)

Do you want  to own a dog – how to train a dog?

Do you want  to own a dog? Well, first of all not that every dog deserves a loving home. In fact, it has a right to it. Owning a dog is a great approach ever. Why? Dogs provide an unconditional love lasting companionship than any other pet. Dogs help to reduce stress and lower the blood pressure of the owner. They typically make sure that you take a short walk outside every day. Both adults and children tend to develop self-esteem, confidence and boost their social skills by living with a dog. The following are some crucial tips on how to train a dog.

How to train your dog to come (Training the Ideal Recall) :

Training a dog to respond and come when called is not only crucial but also for security or safety reasons. A recall command could save your dog between life and death, especially when your dog is headed for a very busy street or gets loose. Most dogs that respond to this simple command have freedom to enjoy outside. Employ a training technique that shows your dog enough of patience, interests, positive reinforcement and consistency. The techniques assist him the necessary call command. How?

Problem Scenario (We’ve all seen this).

An owner lets his dog out to do his business. Before long, the dog has eliminated and the owner calls him home. The dog ignores owner, and continues to wander around aimlessly.

The owner calls again. And again. And again, more of a roar this time; the owner is growing angry. Before long, panic begins to set in, the recalls become shaky, and the dog simply continues to wander about aimlessly like nothing happened.

When the dog finally does return, it is punished for not returning in time.

What Went Wrong?
1. One Recall Only should suffice; don’t place your dog in a situation that you think will require excessive attempts, like something excessively distracting. After the first attempt fails, continued recalls only serve to let the dog know he doesn’t need to come; his owner will wait for him and he can respond at his leisure.
2. The owner lost composure, becoming emotional; something a natural pack leader Would Never Do. In the wild, a pack’s Alpha always retains a calm sense of composure, never showing any emotion or becoming overly erratic. A wise handler always tries to mimic a naturally occurring response.
3. Dogs aren’t humans, and don’t think like human children. Punishing a dog for not behaving in time is not only ridiculous, but it works against the very behavior the owner is trying to promote. Unlike humans, dogs lack the capability to reason; they aren’t going to understand why they are being punished, and will end up simply deciding not to return rather than face punishment.

Recall Training

To begin training a good recall, you want to first establish the association- ‘____ means I should come to my owner!’

Step One:
Begin with a command word (I like to use something a little less common, like ‘Here’). Have your pup sit in front of you, speaking that word and offering a treat simultaneously.

  • The trainer in the video jumps ahead a little bit, forgoing the ‘association’ step. You need to make sure your dog knows what ‘come’ or ‘here’ means before expecting it to respond.

Step Two
Once you’re sure your dog has made the connection between the words you are using and their meaning (come to me), begin increasing the distance. Call from other rooms, or around corners. This is an ongoing process; continue training your pup a little every day!

  • You want to give your dog incentive to return to you; this is where the enthusiastic praise and treats come in. Remember to reward your dog Every Single Time you use this particular command; that is part of the association. You want your pup to think they will get something out of coming to you; stop rewarding, and you may remove their desire to obey.

  • Again, dogs aren’t human children; the same psychology that would work on a child is wasted with them. If they see whatever is currently occupying them as more rewarding than you (your recall), they aren’t going to obey.

Other Technique

  1. choose a proper location for training and then leash your dog.
  2. Just say “come” and start taking quick steps backward.
  3. When you start walking faster, a dog will want to chase you playfully.
  4. Use your hand signal also to call your dog.
  5. It is advisable to repeat this procedure frequently so that your dog master his name and respond when he is called.

Eliminating Distractions

Dogs are distracted easily, and they tend to have a relatively short attention span. Some breeds, such as the Border Collie, were bred with an intense focus (one of the facets that make them so effective) which can be near impossible to break, making distractions a bigger problem.

The best way to eliminate distractions is to simply avoid them. If you can’t, try to make yourself seem like the most interesting thing around! Remember, as long as you are more interesting/rewarding than everything else, your dog will want to be around you.

Urban Environment

The image above is a little bit of an exaggeration. However, it is best to keep your pet leashed in a city environment like that; no matter how good your recall may be, busy roads and other animals that may not be trained well pose a danger.

How to train a dog to listen :

It is usually difficult to make your dog pay attention when you are talking about it. However, you have to follow a particular procedure to train him to listen to you.

  1. First, remove all excess energy. How? Practice exercise first, discipline and finally affection.
  2. Excited energy in your pup may be distracting. Be consistent.
  3. If your dog is receiving different information or messages about his behavior, it will be difficult for him to understand what you require from him.
  4. It will be worth if you sit down with your family members and discuss on boundaries, rules, and limitation to set for your dog.
  5. Stop depending on verbal commands only.
  6. Not that dogs never talk to each other. They usually use body languages and energy to convey their messages. Finally, it is better to notice the emotion states of your dog.

How to train your dog to sit :

Teaching a dog to sit is one of the simplest behaviors you can work on! You needn’t even consider these in steps; simply hold a treat to your dog’s nose, ‘Luring’ the dog into a ‘sit’ by raising the treat upwards. The dog’s nose will follow the treat up until he reaches a ‘sit’ position.

Some dogs might back up rather than sit; you can attempt this near a wall, or place your other hand behind them (preventing room to back up).

Sitting is one of the easiest skills to train your dog. A dog who sits on command is easier to manage. To train your dog to sit, just take his level either on a chair or the floor.

Hand Signals

The video you see is rather extensive, overkill for a simple sit. Why, you ask? Because it deals with K9 training, not simple dog training. Unlike the trainer in the video, agility/professional show dog trainers will want to retain that ‘hand signal’, eventually commanding their dogs to sit with nothing but a hand signal.

The reasoning for this- your dog is going to interpret your visual cues before vocal ones. Once you have your ‘sit’ established, accompany the command with the exact same hand motion every time- your dog will soon make the connection.

  • The true master dog trainer can accomplish mostly everything (recalls being an exception, as visual contact must be made) with a simple hand signal, never needing vocal cues. It takes time and well-practiced methods to reach that point; don’t become upset if you can’t.

Like the trainer says in the video above, timing is always important. You want to reward a behavior immediately after it is performed! Don’t leave any gap for the dog to associate your reward with other behaviors.

Clicker Training

In fact, this is the intended purpose behind the clicker- to ‘bridge the gap’ between a behavior and its’ reward. It could take a few seconds to reach into your pocket (or pouch, in this case) for a reward, maybe a second or two to speak a command. It doesn’t even take half a second to push a button; there is absolutely no room at all for alternate behaviors to occur!

  • The clicker is merely to let the dog know it performed well, and a reward is coming; you still need to reward the dog.
  • The clicker actually started out as a training tool for dolphins!

Other Technique – how to train a dog:

  1. Hold him and treat more close to the nose.
  2. Let the head of your dog follow the treat as you lift your hands up.
  3. Once his head moves up, his butt will apparently lower.
  4. When his butt touches the floor, withdraw your support and release the treat to his mouth.

In fact, your dog is now sitting. Don’t forget to praise him for his brilliance. It is wise to repeat this procedure regularly every day. It is also recommended to pair the word “sit” with this training and behavior.

guide to train your dog to down :

  1. Hold a tasty treat in your hands. Make sure your hands are closed and place it at the muzzle of your dog.
  2. Once he notices the treat’s scent, direct your hands toward the floor. The dog tends to follow the hand that is holding the treat.
  3. When his head follows your hand, lead your hands in front of him along the floor.
  4. His entire body will follow his head. Once he fully stretches out into a down, reveal the treat and let him eat it. Repeat that procedure frequently every day and pair that behavior with “down.”

Training your dog to wait at the doorways :

It is also good to teach your pup always to wait for permission for getting out.To teach your dog to wait before going out an open door eventually, you’ll also need to show her that bolting will not be applicable. Unless you have first made it impossible for your dog to get out, never open the door heading to the outside.

How to train your dog to stand :

You might not use “stand” command, but it is critical when you want your dog to hold a particular standing position. When grooming or bathing your dog, standing is is also needed for obedience and rally classes. How do you teach your dog to stand? It is easy and straightforward. In facts, most dogs get this concept quickly.Just command your dog to stand in front of you, approximately a foot away. Hold a sweet treat directly and parallel to your dog’s nose. Slowly move the sweet scent treat towards his nose.your dog will try to stand to reach that treat. As he stands, praise him and quickly offer the treat as a reward. However, as he tries to stand consistently, don’t hold that treat longer. Once he develops a habit of standing quickly with the signal of your hand, make sure you add the verbal cue “stand.”

How to train a dog to speak :

This is one of the most funniest behaviors of your dog. It also a useful behavior and trick. It becomes easy to teach your dog on how to stop barking on a cue. You can also offer a reward to your dog by just barking once compared to barking non-stop for several hours. First, investigate on the thing that usually makes you dog more excited to yell. This may be a treat, ball or any toy. Try ringing a bell or knocking a door if toys and treats fail. Wave you objects around to make him bark excitedly. Once your dog barks, denote by a verbal cue “good” or “yes.” Don’t forget to reward him with play toys or sweet treats. Put this behavior on the signal by adding some verbal signals if he starts consistently.

Tips for your dog to leave it :

“to leave it” cue usually teaches your dog most invaluable lesson. It imposes an impulse control that may be useful in many areas. Hold a treat in your hand and ensure some little pieces are left sticking out. Your dog should not have easy access to them. Extend the food towards the dog’s nose and get him try to get it out of your hand. Ensure you don’t give it to your dog. It will try to paw it out of your hands. Stop him or move his nose back. Once he makes a motion, praise him and offer the treat. Repeat this procedure in a couple of times until your dog develops a habit of taking his nose away from the treat. After that, add the word “leave it.” The verbal cue will build up the association between the wording and the action.
All these are tips on how to train your dog. They are beneficial, and you have to follow them if you want your dog to develop that habit and tricks

How to choose a dog that fits your style :

The final decision to bring a beautiful dog needs careful consideration. Not all breeds of dogs are the same. Various breeds come in different shapes and sizes. In facts, some dogs need more exercises than others. Some of them might be predisposed to live with a dog family and can’t live alone at all. Different breeds need a little more spacious house to feel comfortable at home. Some are perfect for apartments.

What will I consider? Well, when you decide to choose your new friend in your vicinity, find the barking tendencies, child-friendly, affectionate, adaptability and exercise needs. Also, check out whether your dog pet is trainable and its level of intelligent.

How to prepare your mental for dog training :

Note that dogs do get bored with the same repeated routine every day. Constant exposing to some creative new tricks and mentally challenging them is the most important things for comprehensive training. Just create new skills if you are ready to overturn the basic and daily routine commands. Where will I get new tricks? Well, check on the websites, books and question the dog trainers to get new ideas. Also, it is wise to play with toys and interactive games. Purchase new doggies board games or puzzles for a mental challenge. Engage your dog in games that enhance its memory or Dog Dominos. Provide toys that allow you to hide a treat and engage your dog in figuring out on how to solve them out.

How to choose the right equipment for dog training :

It is mandatory for dog owners to keep a regular collar on their dogs. Your dog must be wearing a collar and ID tags in addition to microchips. However, flat collars aren’t ideal for daily walks with your dog. Why? Well, your dog can be in jeopardy of neck pain and injuries even those that pulls lightly. Dogs that are panicked can easily slip out of the same collars. When it comes to dog training options, you might be overwhelmed. No-pull harnesses and head collars are two easy and efficient options for training your dog to walk correctly on a leash. They are valuable tools for training your dogs.

How to choose name for your dog :

Are you preparing to name your dog pet? Great, you have to consider some tips on how to perform dog naming. First, try as much as possible to use sharp consonants such as sh, ch, k, s among others. Why? The name starting with these consonants typically work well when catching your pet’s attention. They also sound well in a high frequency. Dogs tend to respond very quickly to these sounds. End the name with an attractive vowel too.
Also, stick with a very short name. This gives you an easy time to recognize the name in comparison to multiple names. Be sure that you will use that name in public. Avoid names that are common and convey family meaning. Why? Your dog might run to another person, or you get a dog jumping on you either at the dog park or vet. It is also great to avoid commanding names.

Train your dog on an empty stomach :

Most people often train their dogs after a meal. Well, just ask yourself how sluggish you become after a meal. There is no difference with dogs. Training a full stomach dog is futile. It is also dangerous because he can twist his gut.The right time for training is when your dog is on an empty stomach. In fact, at this time, a dog is light hungry and responses are sharp. As soon as he gets home, feed him and also give him some minutes out for toilet duties. After this, let him sleep. Soon he will embrace the rhythm, and you get a perfect chance for your dog to listen to you. Note that this is not a cure for bad behaviors. It ensures success training.

The enough time for training your dog :

Do you train your dog often enough? Well, most people teaches their dog pets on basic routine and behaviors. When this training relationship stabilizes, they tend to allow their dog to proceed on their own. Consequently, the time for responding to most important actions might worsen. In fact, the dog stops even responding. This degradation is as a result of poor or lack of practice.
Instead of all these issues, train a dog extensively and keep its established behaviors intact and sharp. How is this achieved? Work on your dogs regularly and randomly. Give enough time for training, generally several times every day. Establish new behaviors and tricks for your dog every month.

End the training on a positive note :

Dogs frequently imprint on the strongest things they have ever experienced. When training your dog, it is wise to end on a positive note. How will I involve a positive note?

  1. Especially when you end your session on a new trick, make sure that your dog does it perfectly.
  2. Reward a dog after training because he obeyed all your commands.
  3. Don’t rebuke for taking off.
  4. Applying this method, you have ended your dog training in a more impressive manner, and your dog won’t miss the training next day.
